QUILTS
Since 1980 I've been making painted quilts composed of at least nine separate paintings, often on paper, which I machine-stitch together to make quilts. The first series was watercolor paintings on Arches paper. I then made original oil paintings, usually 10" x 13" which I color copied on a Canon color copier. I would then sew together nine, twelve, sixteen or twenty pictures and make a quilt any size from 10 x 13 overall to 5 feet by 6 feet. I also made oil paintings on canvas which I stitched together. The largest, "American Landscape Quilt," was 6 feet by 7 feet, exhibited all over the United States. Below are some of my small quilts. I will try to add more from time to time.

Potrero Garden Quilt.

The paintings in this quilt are the view from my studio to the beautiful steep garden in back of my house on Potrero Hill in San Francisco. From this garden with it's birds of paradise, antique roses, camellias and lemon tree, one has a sweeping view of the San Francisco skyline, the Bay Bridge, and the Oakland Hills. We see the fog coming in across the Bay on the other side of the city, but it's usually sunny on Potrero Hill.

This quilt is 8" x 10" overall. It is composed of nine laser prints of original watercolor paintings. The prints are machine stitched. When framed the whole piece is 11" x 14" and can be ordered for $95.00.

Monet Quilt.

Monet himself is the inspiration for this quilt, not to mention his paintings. We might go through a time when we are bored with Monet but then one day we walk up close to his water lilies and see again that he saw the world on the smallest and largest scale simultaneously. He recorded every vibration of life, sometimes called color, with his own hand. Long live the revolution but he's a great painter.

Red Fish Quilt.

When I lived in Maine I decided to make a quilt of Maine fish. I soon discovered that they are all gray or silver so I helped them out a little by coloring them. If you look hard, you'll see real species here, dressed up for Halloween.

Nighttime Quilt

The original paintings for this quilt were made ten years ago when I was living "Down East" in Maine, across the Bay from Bar Harbor. Although I had not been a landscape painter until that time, the light and terrain were so beautiful that I frequently painted the things I saw outside.

Heron Quilt

I remember my first close up heron when I was driving one day near Chincateague (can't spell that) on the eastern shore of Maryland. It was about 8 a.m. near in late December and zero degrees outside. We were headed south and the sun was coming up over the marshes. A heron arose out of the ditch to the left of the car. He seemed to be as long as the car and glided along beside us for a quarter of a mile. Ever since then I've made lots of heron paintings and seen lots more of them.

Yosemite Quilt

In 1991 I met my kids in Yosemite. Some of them are rock climbers. I'd never been there before. It was early May. The drive down through the gold country, the two weeks camping, and the days after in the eastern Sierra were beyond anything I had ever known back in Maine. Less than five months later, I had moved to California. I paint Yosemite all the time now.
