"Let's
close that gap between art and technology NOW!" says Sherry Miller,
San Francisco Bay Area webguru, columnist and artist. Miller advises
people interested in sex and humor not to go into multimedia and then
contradicts herself by building websites, consulting, writing a web
database manual, hosting online forums, editing two online magazines,
and speaking in public about women online. Miller moved from Maine to
the Bay Area in late 1991 and now claims a strong
voice in the New Media industry.
How
Many Organizations Are Enough?
She was a founder, newsletter editor, and board member of the Northbay
Multimedia Association. She was also an IICS newsletter columnist,
online editor, and Council Member. She's volunteered for MDG, Webgrrls,
Women in Multimedia and Impact OnLine.
Does
she ever paint anymore?
At Siggraph '95, Miller made her first
digital Encad and Iris prints. She digitizes, revises and creates new
artwork, posting it on the net and emailing it to unsuspecting victims.
Her art appears on various web sites. Meanwhile, she makes at least ten
new paintings every year. Her large intensely colored paintings of tropical
and third world subjects have been exhibited annually on the east and
west coasts since 1978.
Remember
the Maine!
For ten years Miller was a feature writer and columnist for The
Maine Sunday Telegram, Maine's largest paper, and the Casco
Bay Weekly, Maine's major alternative paper as well as other
New England publications. During these years Miller was also a full time
professional painter with exhibitions annually in New England, New York
and Pennsylvania. In 1995 she revisited her old haunts
and remains loyal to Maine.
Crafty
Miller
Crafty Miller
helped build CraftWeb, one
of the first online sites for art in craft media. Sherry organized the
first major American Craft auctions in New York in 1979 and 1980 under
the Chairmanship of designer, Jack Lenor Larsen for the Haystack
Mountain School of Crafts.(She also built Haystack's first website.)
Prior to that she raised funds for College
of the Atlantic, the college responsible for one of the first Ecology/Environmental
programs in the United States. Before moving to Maine, Miller was President
and Founder of a New York City furniture manufacturing business whose
first client was Bloomingdales.
Did
she ever go to school?
Miller graduated from Barnard
College where she studied Near Eastern Archaeology and Russian. She also
attended McGill University, the Pennsylvania Academy of Art, the Tyler
School of Art, and the Art Students League. Miller is a worldwide traveler
including Siberia, Mongolia, the Central Asian Republics, and West Africa
(Cameroon).
Some
Kids
She has a lot of children who barely use computers. One is a Russian
speaking ceramic artist on the shores of Puget Sound. Another manages
the Seattle and Easthampton film festivals. One worked in the US Eighth
Federal Circuit Court of Appeals when she wasn't studying Torah. Another
is a rock climber and professor of Christian Theology at Creighton University.
One teaches at Evergreen State College. There are more but who wants
to hear about children. Miller cooked for ten people every night for
twenty
years
but there were only five in the family. They ate a lot.
